Environment

Wood offers the combination of energy efficiency and renewability unlike any other building material. No other natural resource can be as cost effective, yet as good for the environment as wood. And, as technology improves, we are able to retrieve more viable fiber from the tree than ever before. In fact, the production of engineered wood products is one of the most effective uses of wood fiber available today.

Just looking at an I-joist cross-section shows how much less wood fiber is required to outspan traditional lumber and, with Nordic I-joists, every piece is 100% usable, unlike dimensional lumber. Optimizing fiber in this fashion is necessary if we are to maintain a viable resource base for future generations to rely on.

Every year, over 200 employees engage intensive operations on over 2 million acres in our forestry management program. Refined cutting and felling techniques minimize the impact on natural regeneration. Internal initiatives, such as the establishment of an Environmental management system that has been certified ISO-14001, assure minimal environmental impact by preventing erosion and runoff, while pre-thinning reduces competition for available nutrients.

Nordic achieves all these goals without the use of clear-cutting methods long associated with the lumber industry. Nordic's responsible forest management program assures biodiversity in the woodlands with new, middle-aged and mature trees perpetuating a constant growth cycle.

Nordic’s team of technicians and engineers has developed proprietary processes that allow us to extract wood fiber from traditionally undesirable log segments. Nordic’s featured process makes use of tree tips that had traditionally been left in the forest as waste. This exceptionally strong all-heart fiber now makes up the core of our glulam beams and columns.

It’s just another example of Nordic’s commitment to the proper stewardship of the environment.
