Harvest and Regeneration

At Chantiers Chibougamau, our professionals have always been at the forefront of the industry’s most rigorous forest management practices.

In 2009 they were instrumental in helping us be the first private company to receive FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification in Quebec’s boreal forest and the first certified supplier of engineered wood in North America.

We owe our success to our team’s ability to establish open and respectful dialogue with all communities concerned by planned harvesting operations and to use only the most surgical, modern techniques to minimize the impact on local ecosystems.

Chantiers Chibougamau’s technicians, engineers, and managers are backed by a network of partners made up of specialized businesses in Chibougamau; the Cree communities of Mistissini, Oujé-Bougoumou, and Waswanipi; and the Saguenay–Lac-St-Jean RCMs of Maria-Chapdelaine and Domaine-du-Roy.

Once the harvest is complete, Chantiers Chibougamau applies forest regeneration techniques aimed at ensuring that the harvested areas grow back into a forest at least as productive as the last. Great care is taken during harvest to maximize the potential for natural regeneration and restore the forest to its original diversified makeup. When appropriate, we use reforestation to breathe new life into areas of the forest in need of a helping hand.

Additionally, at Chantiers Chibougamau we’re proud to make it a priority to recruit local Chibougamau students for our seasonal teams, to help them finance their postsecondary studies.
